Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why are your prices so reasonable? Are your photos inferior to the high-dollar photographers?
A. Our work is by no means inferior. We operate a small independent photo business that specializes in Wedding Photography. Our prices are a reflection of our low overhead and cost control. All our business dealings are based on fairness and respect, including the price.

Q. How many hours of coverage will we need?
A. The typical hours of coverage are: 4, 6, 8 & 10 hours. We feel that most wedding events can be covered within these time frames.

Q. How many photographers will cover our wedding?
A. Two - we are a husband and wife team that believes in working together to capture your event from different perspectives. A common complaint about wedding photography is that it takes too long! After the wedding, your family and friends want to celebrate with you - not sit around waiting for lengthy picture taking. With two photographers working to coordinate shots, we are able to complete the process fast and efficiently. Also, we find that having a female photographer to cover the bride and her bridesmaids while preparing for the ceremony is less intrusive.

Q. Will you be the actual photographers for our wedding?
A We are a husband & wife team. Your wedding will be photographed by John & Lisa.

Q. Is there any chance that you will attempt to direct our wedding?
A. Absolutely not! We merely offer great advice and assist in whatever way is appropriate and desired by you. We are always mindful that this is YOUR SPECIAL DAY and you are the boss. Contrary to some photographers, we hold to the belief that this is your Wedding Day, not a "photo op day".

Q. How long after the wedding does it take to get our proofs, photo CD's , DVD slideshows or photo books?
A. We usually have wedding proofs and photo books ready within three to four weeks of your final proof or phot book selection.

Q. Who chooses my enlargements?
A. You do. Reprint orders usually take about two to three weeks.

Q. Do you recommend for wedding photography black & white or color?
A. We recommend an enlightened mix of color and black & white to capture your special day for generations to come.

Q. How long will our proof gallery be available online?
A. All wedding galleries are available for 6 months.

Q. What type of equipment do you use? Do you offer digital photography?
A. We use only Professional Canon digital equipment. Because weddings are fast paced and spontaneous, we use digital SLR's because these types of cameras are better suited for constantly changing lighting and settings. The quality of digital SLR cameras are equal to surpass 35mm film cameras.

Q. Do you have backup equipment?
A. Simply put, YES! We carry adequate equipment for everything in the unlikely event something fails to work or is damaged during the day.

Q. Do you work out of a studio or your home?
A. All administrative duties are taken care of in our home office. We do not have a fancy studio for taking photographs since 90% of our work is done away from the office. We don't have the need for the expensive decor that you will find at fancy studios. This keeps our costs down, which of course keeps your costs down. Most of our clients prefer outdoor pictures for their engagement sessions, but in the event you would prefer them indoors, we can have space available for indoor studio work.

Q. Do we get the negatives?
A. YES, you will receive the digital negatives from your wedding day.

Q. How much of a deposit is required to hold our wedding date?
A. We require a non-refundable retainer of $400 to reserve your date. This confirms the date for you. The final balance is due at least 30 days prior to the wedding. Of course, paying in advance of the due date is always acceptable.

Q. My Aunt likes photography, will you allow her to take pictures at my wedding?
A. Of course, your aunt is welcome to take pictures. Normally we do not mind if a few guests or relatives shoot over our shoulders. Indeed, some photographers would not allow this at all. However, there are some things to consider. We find the more people that are photographing you at the altar after the ceremony, the longer it takes to finish the job. Also, with several people shooting from several different directions, the larger groups do not know where to look, resulting in pictures of people looking in different directions. The only type of photographer we do not allow is another professional or anyone photographing your event with the intent of selling pictures either in digital or printed format.

Q. What kind of pictures do you take?
A. We always adhere to your wishes in terms of the style of pictures taken. Our overall style could best be described as contemporary. This is a good combination of true photojournalistic candids, the best of the traditional groups and portraits, and our own in-between style that is more relaxed, fun, and romantic - where we aren't posing you to the 9th degree, but allow your own personality to come out.
Another important thing to remember is the opportunity for family photos. Weddings are one of life's events where family members from near and far gather. A wedding is a time and place where your friends and family get together in one place, for a happy occasion. How many times will this happen in your lifetime? When was the last time you had a good picture with your mother or father...grandparents....aunts uncles, etc? If you really think about it, wedding photographs are truly a family heirloom because they are not only a part of your personal history, but also a part of your children’s family history.

Q. What about pictures at different locations?
A. Limiting the number of locations is common among wedding photographers. They'd love it if you just had everything in one place, so they don't have to keep packing up. You, on the other hand, may have wanted portraits done not just at the church and reception hall, but also at the park or beach, or maybe where he proposed to you! We do not charge extra for different locations within reasonable distance from your event and within your allotted time frame.

Q. Why hire a wedding photographer? Can’t Uncle Willie or a freind take pictures?
A. Producing quality wedding photos is very difficult. Weddings are fast moving, dynamic events and experience is a must...if you want good photographs. The photographer has to deal with a multitude of different environments and lighting situations. Your wedding photos are one of the few things that will last for years to come after the wedding. The food will be eaten, the wedding dress hangs in the closet, and the flowers have long since wilted. But the photos can bring back the memories of your special day for a lifetime.
Uncle "Willie" could take your photos, but he probably doesn’t photograph weddings very often and is unlikely to have the equipment needed for the special lighting conditions found at the church and reception. Hire White Telfer Photography and introduce us to Uncle "Willie" --we’ll be happy to meet him.

Q. What is the best way to reserve White Telfer Photography for my wedding?
A. Please use our availability form on the wedding packages page to check your date on our website calendar. Our policy is this: the first deposit we accept will reserve the date and time. Popular days (like Saturday) go quickly, so promptness is important.
